Beaches

If you’re coming to Hawaii, it’s for one thing and one thing only: the beaches. World-renowned and beautiful, Hawaii definitely offers up a paradise of water, sand, palm trees, and sun. Here are some of the better beaches that Hawaii has to offer:

Waikola Beach

Located on the South Kohala coast, Waikola Beach is known for its large amount of palm trees and fishponds, as well as ancient villages which represent the cultural uniqueness of Hawaii. The main attraction is Ala Kahakai, known in English as “Trail By The Sea”, which is an ancient pathway that goes alongside the coast by the Waikoloa bay. This coastline connected many communities and temples for many years. It is approximately 180 miles long.

Punalu’u Beach

Also known as Black Sand Beach, Punalu’u contains black sand that comes from basalt, that was initially created from lava that flowed into the ocean and washed up ashore, bringing with it the molten color. You can get a real taste of nature by witnessing the Hawksbill and Green turtles, which lay in the sand year round. The black sand also gives the water a darker texture, and although the water seems unseemly and dirty, is actually very fresh and edible.

Po’ipu Beach

This is a great family beach, as it has swimming and snorkeling areas, as well as a surfing area. The county of Kaua’i presides over the beach, and offers much more than just beach activity. Head into Po’ipu for some awesome activities, including ATV riding, an Aulii Luau every night, bicycle tours, kayaking, a heritage trail hiking area, ziplining, mini-golf, and botanical gardens.

History

Hawaii isn’t all beaches and fun. Be sure to check out the USS Arizona Memorial, which is perhaps one of the most unknown but important World War II commemoration sites that visitors can enter. This site serves as a monument for the Pearl Harbor attack, as well as fallen service members. The site is only reachable by boat, though there was a center that was recently built on land, offering a fascinating look into World War II, the battleship, and other historical artifacts and history.

Culture

The Bishop Museum is an impressive holding of many artistic and cultural exhibits. It was created in 1889 in honor of Princess Bernice Bishop, and showed off royal Hawaiian artifacts. The main gallery lives in the Hawaiian Hall, which is a three story building built in Victorian-era style. The starkness and accuracy of the Hawaiian culture was captured in exhibits which show off a grass thatched house, shark tooth war clubs, temples, and the famous feathered cloak that was purportedly built from the feathers of 80,000 birds! The Bishop museum is not well known throughout the world, but is considered by some to be the most impressive and accurate Polynesian anthropoligcal style museum in the entire world.
